Air Conditioning Blunders

air-conditioner-1024x768This insane heat wave that we’re in the middle of has everyone cranking down their air conditioning units to provide some comfort to the sweltering weather outdoors. While you’re taking cover from the extreme weather, you may be exerting a ton of stress on your air conditioning unit that can cost you big time later on. Today, we want to share with you a few common air conditioning mistakes, and how you can fix them before they put the freeze on you.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make in regards to their air conditioning units is not changing their filters often. With air constantly flowing from the outside, dirt, debris, microorganisms, and microbes will all be coming along, which is where your filter steps in. Depending on how often you use your unit, these filters can fill up quite quickly, and when they do, they lose their effectiveness. In fact, it is estimated that a dirty air conditioning filter can add up to 5%-15% on your over AC bill, so it literally pays to change them every so often, especially in these scorching days of summer. As a general rule, you should be changing them every 3 months, but if you constantly rely on your unit for salvation from the heat, you should change them more often.

Another common blunder is not taking advantage of “selective cooling” or cooling certain rooms. Let’s say you have a guest bedroom in your home, which no one is staying in. If no one goes in there, wouldn’t it make sense to shut off the vents, and cut off that precious cool air from going into a room that nobody goes into? By employing selective cooling, you are better able to cool down the rooms that matter, and with a fraction of the cost. It is just another thing to think about during these extremely hot days.

In addition, not making ample use of fans can be quite the cooling blunder. From ceiling fans to table fans and to tower fans, all fans will promote airflow throughout your home, making it cooler without the use of your air conditioning unit. By doing this, you can stay cool AND lower your AC bill, especially if you have a programmable thermostat. These fans will cool down your home, cutting down your reliance on the electricity-hungry AC unit, and will save you money. What’s not to love?

With a little love, care, and know-how, you can keep your home cool even through the hottest of days, all while not breaking the bank. Whether you love your air conditioning unit, pool, or trusty fan, we hope that you’ll stay cool out there, American Dream Realty fans!
